Free guide · 2 to 5 years
She saves her hardest moments for you. Here is what to say.
As promised: the exact words for each of the 5, for a 2 to 3 year old and for a 4 to 5 year old.
Say it calmly, in the moment. Then stay close.
Our words as parents, not a script from a study. Change them to sound like you.

The after-school meltdown.
"You were brave all day. You can cry here."
Hold her. Water and a snack first. Questions about school can wait. If she pushes you away, sit close without touching. Why it helps: a tired child can't talk yet; her body needs to settle first.
No to you, yes to Dadi.
"You and Dadi did it so nicely. Now let's do it together. Shoes on: you put them on, or I help?"
Why it helps: a small choice gives her the say she wants, and the rule still holds.
Tears at goodbye.
"I'm going to office. I'll come back after your nap. I always come back."
Same words every day. A short goodbye. Never slip out without telling her. Why it helps: when the words never change, she learns the coming back never changes.
"I don't like you!"
"You're angry with me. I won't let you hit. I'm right here."
Few words. Stay close. Why it helps: your calm voice tells her the anger did not break anything between you.
Baby again after guests.
"You want to be my little baby today. Come, I'll carry you."
Say yes for a few days. Why it helps: after a big week she needs to feel small and safe before she can be big again. In our experience it passes within days; if it lasts weeks, see the honest note below.

The after-school meltdown.
"Long day? First a hug. You can tell me about it later."
If she pushes you away, sit close without touching. At bedtime, ask: "What was the hardest part of school today?" Why it helps: at four and five she can talk about the day, but only once her body is calm.
No to you, yes to Dadi.
"You said no to me. That's okay, I'm still here. Let's find a way together."
Keep the rule. Let her choose how it gets done. Why it helps: at this age she wants a say; a real choice gives her one without losing the rule.
Tears at goodbye.
"You're sad I'm going. I'll be back after your evening snack. Draw me one thing you did today."
Why it helps: a time she knows from her own day means more than a clock, and the drawing gives her something to wait for.
"I don't like you!"
"You're very angry with me. You can say it. I won't let you hit or throw. I still love you."
Later, when she is calm: "Next time you feel this angry, you can stamp your feet." Why it helps: she learns the feeling is allowed and the hitting is not.
Baby again after guests.
"Big days make us want to be small. Five minutes on my lap, then you help me set the table."
Cuddle first, a small job after. Why it helps: she gets to be little and big in the same evening.

Something calm for her hands in the first hour home.
Hanuman's Fruit Hunt: she slides the magnet pen and guides each fruit to its place. No lights, no sounds, so her day can settle. It will not stop the tears. It comes after the hug, never instead of it.
See Hanuman's Fruit HuntWhen parents learned to answer their child's signals, slightly fewer children were insecurely attached.

A review of 69 groups of children (5,947 in all) linked insecure attachment with more behaviour problems later, a link, not proof (Fearon and colleagues, Child Development, 2010). On going backwards when tired, the child psychologist Nupur D Paiva, quoted in a caption shared by Sitaara, says a small child "is still majority baby underneath". The 5 moments on this page are our reading as parents; they were not tested as signs.
I am Manjunath. I built a maze for my daughter, and these guides are what I learnt on the way.
The 5 moments on this page are ones every parent of a small child knows. The words are ours to try, not rules.

She comes home and screams at you because you gave her the wrong water bottle. What first?
The bottle is rarely the real problem. She has been brave all day. A tired child can't answer questions yet. Calm her body first, then talk. Our advice as parents, not a study.
Every child is different. Talk to a children's doctor if she loses words or skills she had, if going back to baby ways lasts more than a few weeks, if goodbyes stay very hard for many weeks, or if she hurts herself or others most days.
