The shout comes at the end. Here are the 5 signs before it.

As promised: 5 early signs that your patience is running out, and one small thing to do at each one.

Catch it early

The earlier you notice, the smaller the fix.

Our reading as parents, not a study. Your order may differ.

  1. Painting: a mother on a phone call at the kitchen counter, laptop open, pressure cooker on, laundry waiting

Sign 1. Your body is tight. Jaw shut, shoulders up near your ears.
Do drop your shoulders and drink a glass of water before the next thing.

  2. Painting: a little girl throws her spoon in anger at the dining table

Sign 2. You say the same thing a third time. Louder does not reach an upset child. "Shoes. Shoes. I said SHOES."
Do stop talking. Sit down at her eye level and say it once, slowly.

  3. Painting: a mother eats a banana and drinks water at the kitchen counter while her daughter holds a biscuit beside her

Sign 3. You feel shaky, very hungry, or a headache is starting. When you are hungry, small things feel bigger.
Do eat something small before the bath and bedtime rush.

  4. Sign 4. Everything is noisy at once. TV, cooker whistle, phone, two questions from her.
Do switch one thing off. Usually the TV.
  5. Painting: a little girl scolds her doll with a pointed finger while her mother watches from the doorway
Sign 5. Your voice is already rising.
    Do these three steps:
    1. Make sure she is safe and away from the stove.
    2. Say "Mom needs one minute" and step to the doorway, where you can still see her.
    3. Breathe out slowly five times, longer out than in. Drink some water.

How it builds

Patience rarely runs out in one go. It drains in steps.

Tap your hardest hour

When does your patience run out most?

Pack the night before. Bag, bottle and clothes by the door before you sleep. Wake ten minutes before her, so your tea comes first.

It is not only your job

Split the hardest hour. Tap for a line to send.

Painting: a tired mother sits alone on the sofa late at night, a small lamp on

In many homes, in our experience, the hardest hour is 6 to 9 in the evening, when one adult does everything.

If you did shout

Come back, and say three short things.

Painting: a mother kneels on the kitchen floor hugging her little girl close

"I shouted. It wasn't your fault. I'm sorry." Then a hug, if she wants one. Do not add "but you didn't listen". A sorry with a "but" is not a sorry to her. Coming back after a bad moment helps build her trust. A widely held view of child-development experts, not a promise.

An honest note

If you feel angry or low most days, it is not a failure. Talk to your doctor or a counsellor. If you ever feel you might hurt yourself or your child, call Tele-MANAS, the free government helpline, on 14416. If someone is in danger right now, call 112.

Why one minute matters

A child's stress settles faster when a calm, caring adult helps her. Your one minute is how you get back to calm.

Painting: a tired mother rests against the sofa while her little girl plays with blocks nearby

Your calm comes first. Hers follows.

Harvard Center on the Developing Child: stress becomes harmful when it is strong, frequent or long-lasting and no caring adult helps the child settle. Read via the Center's own summary.

Our reading as parents: one loud evening, followed by a hug, is not that.

Quick check

It's 7:30 PM. The cooker is whistling, she is asking for juice, and you hear your voice getting sharp. What first?
