Painting: a little girl in a teal frock builds with a few wooden blocks on a cream rug, a cloth doll and a steel bowl beside her Free guide · 1 to 4 years

Fewer toys is not less love. Here's how to rotate them.

As promised: a 4-week rotation plan, and what to keep out at ages 1, 2, 3 and 4. Four out at a time. The rest wait their turn.

What to keep out: four things at a time.

One of each kind: something to build, to pretend, to move, to make. Our picks as parents.

Painting: an overflowing toy basket spills toys on the floor while a little girl reaches for one

Too many out: she grabs, drops, grabs the next.

  1. Build: big stacking cups.
  2. Pretend: a soft cloth doll.
  3. Move: a soft ball to roll.
  4. Make noise: a steel bowl and a wooden spoon.

Nothing that fits inside a toilet-roll tube: that size can choke her. No button batteries or loose magnets within reach.

How to run the swap

Four steps, once. Then ten minutes every Sunday.

Painting: a mother puts wrapped gift boxes on a high shelf while her daughter plays with one opened gift

One bag on the top shelf. That's the whole system.

  1. Put every toy in one place for a day. You'll see how many there really are.
  2. Pick four: one to build, one to pretend, one to move, one to make.
  3. Put the rest in a cloth bag on the top shelf.Out of sight is out of mind.
  4. Week 1: four out, the rest in the bag.
  5. Week 2, on Sunday: swap two.
  6. Week 3, on Sunday: swap two more.
  7. Week 4: bring back her week 1 favourite.
Why four

With 4 toys, toddlers played about twice as long.

16 out: she touches one, drops it, grabs the next.

Quick check

Day 2: she says "I'm bored" and points at the shelf bag. What helps most?

An honest note

This is not about owning less forever. Gifts are love; they just take turns. If she seems uninterested in play or in people most days, talk to a children's doctor.
